Corneal Disorders

Fuchs' Corneal Dystrophy is characterized by edema, or swelling, in the cornea that occurs when the endothelium, or inner cellular layers of the cornea, begin to die. These cells are responsible for the dispersion of water from the eye, and, when affected by this condition, they are unable to accurately perform their job, causing the cornea to fill up with water. This excess of water creates swelling that leads to significant visual impairment and, in some more extreme cases, painful corneal blisters.
